LIPOMA REMOVAL PROCEDURE
Lipomas are benign (non-malignant) fat tissue tumors that are very frequent and can be seen anywhere at the body. There is a slow growth of these fat mass and the patient can palpate a consistent round mass under the skin. Most of the time does not cause any problems and their size can remain unchanged for a long period of time. In some patients, though, the lipomas can grow considerably and compress the tissues around them. When lipomas start to produce some symptoms and are an annuance for the patients is time to remove them without delaying further.
The removal of lipomas is performed under local anesthesia through a small incision on the skin. Dr. Skarparis will try to excise the lipoma with the smallest incision he can, so there will not be a visible scar.
When a lipoma has grown considerably, he may use the liposuction technique using a small cannula to aspirate the fat tumor (lipoma) to avoid leaving a long surgical scar by using direct surgical excision. After complete removal of the lipomas, they do not appear again in the area. Sometimes multiple lipomas can exist at the same patient in different areas of the body. Dr. Skarparis will be able to remove all of them at the same time.
The lipoma removal is a minor surgical procedure with minimal risks for complications (infection, etc.) and is performed on an outpatient basis.
